2008 AFP: Keep Your Donors Part 1
Building Donor-Centered Relationships
Donor-centered relationship building: do this well and you'll significantly improve your donor retention. But where do you start? This audioconference teaches you the essentials of building lasting donor relationships. You will learn how to upgrade your fundraising program from one that is merely "transaction-based" to one that is profitably "relationship-based." You will learn to become truly donor-centric and avoid counter-productive -- yet common -- "donor-indifferent" behaviors. You'll take a guided tour of the eight steps that guarantee good relationships.

Lunch and Learn: The BSC MPPM Program
Have you heard of Birmingham-Southern College’s Master of Arts in Public & Private Management (MPPM)? The MPPM is a graduate management degree of distinction offered through Birmingham-Southern College, a nationally ranked private liberal arts institution. Right now there is a special tuition discount for full-time employees of 501(c)(3) organizations. Join us on Friday, July 11th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for a lunch and learn to learn more about the discount. Lunch is provided, and the event will be held at the NRCA offices in Birmingham. Dr. Stephen Craft, Chairperson of Birmingham-Southern College’s Department of Business and Accounting. There will be plenty of time for questions.
Birmingham-Southern College’s Master of Arts in Public and Private Management (MPPM) is often referred to as a liberal arts MBA. In actuality, the MPPM is a hybrid between an MPA, an MBA and an executive MBA. The MPPM is designed for working professionals with a minimum of three years of management experience. The program consists of sixteen courses which can be completed in two years. Evening classes are offered Monday through Thursday from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and each class meets only one night per week. Classes are capped at 20 students, which helps ensure that each student learns from the professors as well as the diverse work experience of their classmates.

Managing Generational Differences
Studies show that never in the history of America that there are so many different age groups working together. Several factors are involved. But the end result is that we have to understand varying work philosophies, either “perceived or real”, before we can begin to manage the diversity of today’s workplace.
The objective for the design of this training session is to ensure that the participants have a comprehensive understanding of the perspectives, realities, and “potential” impact of generational differences as they relate to managing performance and employee engagement in the workplace.

AM_106.3 Splash & Ripple: Using Outcomes to Design & Manage Community Activities
Outcomes can be compelling. Every day, non-profit organizations apply their resources and skills to make life better for individuals, families, and communities. Yet, how can we distinguish if we are making a difference? How do we recognize if we are making an impact? Do things really change for our clients? How will we know? What should we change? The solutions to these questions lie in program outcomes.
This workshop will strengthen your agency's ability to measure and evaluate the impact of programs and projects, and communicate effectiveness to funders, partners, and the public. The workshop will also offer hands-on experience backed up with the use of images or metaphors to aide in understanding Outcome Measurements.

2008 NRMC: Benefits in the Nonprofit Workplace, Balancing Risk and Reward
Employee benefits can include employee insurance coverage (medical, life, dental, disability, unemployment and worker’s compensation), paid leave and holidays, and contributions to retirement plans, as well as a host of other “fringe benefits” that are valuable to attract and retain staff in a competitive hiring environment. Offering too many or too few, benefits can throw a nonprofit’s budget, programs—and ultimately its mission—off course. Attend this Webinar to hear from a benefits expert about emerging trends in nonprofit benefits and how to reduce risks related to your employees’ participation in your nonprofit’s benefits package.

Foundation Center VIDEO Archive/ Balancing Act: The Challenges and Benefits of Volunteers
Over 80 percent of nonprofit agencies involve volunteers, and most nonprofit organizations lack the capacity to evaluate the effectiveness of volunteer involvement. In this session, Jeffrey L. Brudney, Ph.D., Albert A. Levin chair of urban studies and public service at Cleveland State University's Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs, shares a rigorous yet straightforward approach to evaluating volunteer performance based on the Volunteer Management Capacity Study, for which Dr. Brudney was a lead researcher. The study was launched by the USA Freedom Corps, conducted by the Urban Institute, supported by the UPS Foundation, and is now managed by the Volunteer IMPACT Fund.

GV_302 Taking Your Agency to the Next Level
All nonprofits go through life stages that impact their ability to effectively accomplish their mission. An organization's life stage impacts the role of the board, the role of the staff, planning, scope of services, program delivery, plans for growth, community partnerships, financial management, public relations, fundraising, marketing, and volunteer management. Nonprofit board members and staff need to understand their current life stage in order to be able to move to the next level of growth by more effectively addressing future needs, making decisions more proactively, avoiding unnecessary conflicts and anticipating challenges. The class will include an assessment to determine each participant's organizational life stage.

2008 AFP: Keep Your Donors Part 2
The Secrets of Successful Communications
Improved donor retention and increased giving depend heavily on one thing: doing your donor communications the right way. This session, taught by one of North America's leading experts, shows you exactly what it takes to tune up your "donor-communications" program into a high-performance machine. Great donor communications cost no more than poor communications. All that's required is some training. This webconference, based on a landmark new book from AFP/Wiley, teaches you the essentials of communicating well with donors. You'll learn what donors really care about; why reading is not the point of communications (shocking!); and how emotions dominate giving decisions. You'll be introduced to planning for success and measuring your effectiveness. And you'll discover the real role of donor newsletters (virtually every organization gets this wrong). This is totally practical. It applies the latest research. It teaches you proven practices and tips from the world's top fundraising communicators.

2008 NRMC: Managing the Risks of Deploying Youthful Volunteers
Did you know that two-thirds of adults who volunteer began volunteering when they were young? It is popular today for schools and court systems to require graduates and juvenile offenders to engage in community service. As a result, your nonprofit may be asked to accept youth volunteers who may not otherwise be part of your program. What is your obligation to accept those volunteers? And, if you incorporate youth volunteers in your programs anyway, what special protections should your nonprofit have in place both to encourage and protect youth volunteers, as well as to protect your nonprofit?

2008 AFP: Marketing Planned Giving - Maybe We Have It All Wrong?
"If planned giving has so much potential why doesn't it happen?"
"The traditional marketing model doesn't work"! - A familiar complaint of gift planners in organizations in which prospects don't readily identify themselves. What can you do about it? The potential for planned gifts is great. However, we have learned and employ marketing models that are productive for only a few select types of organizations. Even these programs leave much on the table.
It really isn't that difficult to create a great planned giving program. Take the right steps in the right order and results will happen immediately
How could we do things differently? How can we re-think the marketing model borrowing proven techniques from other areas of fundraising? Ken Ramsay will answer these questions with actual results from very different planned giving marketing models including results from different types of organizations. Maybe we do have it all wrong!

GV_302 Governance as Leadership
Nonprofits continue to grow in both size and importance. Today they operate more like businesses and take on more programs that traditionally were in the domain of government. Nonprofit board and staff leaders will increase their understanding of their evolving role and best practices for successfully accomplishing a nonprofit organization's mission.
This class is for individuals who wish to increase their leadership competency in the role of nonprofit board member and nonprofit staff leader. The class will discuss issues and best practices of innovative board governance and nonprofit leadership. Particpants will learn the attributes and indicators of a model board and staff partnership. Actual case studies are interactively discussed in class and help shed insights about what makes new board work more effective than old models of leadership and management.
Governance curriculum resources for class are: Boardsource, Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, Harvard Business School, Stanford's Social Innovation and Enterprise Center, and BANNF Leadership Institute. Leadership materials from authors: John Maxwell, Patrick Lencioni, Michael Useem, and Warren Bennis.
Class is limited to 20 partners (40) participants from nonprofits. Participants receive case studies, toolkits, DVDs, and turnkey forms and manuals.
This class has been extended to 2 full days due to the materials being discussed in class!
Class starts at 9:00 a.m. and adjourns at 5:00 p.m. on Day One. Class starts at 8:00 a.m. and adjourns at 4:00 p.m. on Day Two.
